The name Tiree derives from Tiriodh meaning ‘the land of corn’ but the island is also known as ‘the land below the waves’ as this is how it appears from an approaching boat. Indeed, when standing on some of the deserted beaches, in stormy weather, the sea does seem to rise above the land. Tiree is a place of remote wildness and great beauty - be prepared to become utterly enchanted!
