I think a photographer is like a gambler - often, the desired outcome is not achieved, but occasionally it soooo does!  The elation of the elusive but pleasing shot is what I believe attracts many people to photography in the first place.  Later, like many gamblers, addiction sets in and there follows, at least for the photographer,  increasing degrees of success and satisfaction.  It is the 'high' I get from a good shot that keeps me striving for better pictures.

When I first came to photography it was in the days of film.  It was prohibitively expensive to take lots of shots and time consuming to get the film developed.  I wasn't really learning the craft.  Then I got my first entry level digital camera (which I still have and use today) and suddenly I was free to shoot as much as I liked.  I could try things without worrying about cost and I soon started to learn - and become addicted.

Some of the shots on this site were taken using that first digital camera so don't think it is necessary to have top notch gear to get good shots.  With practice, skill and some decent software, an entry level camera can produce shots every bit as good as a full frame camera.  Its not the kit - its the photographer.  That said, there are times when only specific gear can get you the technical result you want, but that in my experience tends to apply to specialist areas of photography.  If you are a beginner, try to see light and shadow, how to compose a picture and how to operate your camera before thinking that a better camera will get you a better image.  If you don't, you may well be disappointed after a big expense.

Digital photography is amazing BUT it generates a plethora of images which end up on hard drives, DVD's, memory sticks and the cloud, and are hardly ever looked at - at least in my case.  For this reason I have decided to dedicate this part of this web site to showcase those images which feed my addiction.  I had to trawl through literally thousands of images for the ones I present here.  That exercise has taught me to be far more ruthless with the images as they come out the camera.

As to the pictures presented here, whether they be technically good or bad, they bring me much pleasure.  I hope you like them too.......
